Paul Fletcher on the 7:30 Report discussing the Children’s E-Safety Commissioner

Voiceover: But the Government’s research shows there is room for improvement

Paul Fletcher MP: One of the findings of that research was that it can still be difficult to get a response when you lodge a complaint with a social media site.

Voiceover:

However the Commissioner’s powers will be limited when it comes to a proliferation of newer smaller platforms which has no presence in Australia.

Paul Fletcher MP:

First step, be aware of the new sites which are rising up the popularity charts, and secondly reach out and build informal connections with those sites and also communicate with them that even though they may not be subject to Australian law as a formal matter, that the Australian Government has expectations of them. It is troubling , very troubling indeed, when you speak with as I have parents of a child a fifteen, sixteen, or seventeen year old who has committed suicide as a result of relentless harassment and bullying online.
