Western Sydney on ‘Road to Success’ – Final contract awarded for Narellan Road upgrade

WESTERN Sydney is continuing to benefit from the Australian and NSW governments’ investment in local infrastructure with the contract for Stage Two of the Narellan Road upgrade announced today.

Seymour Whyte Constructions Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to build the final stage (80 per cent of overall works) of the 6.8 kilometre $114 million upgrade of Narellan Road to six lanes from Camden Valley Way at Narellan to Blaxland Road at Campbelltown.

Federal Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said upgrading the Western Sydney road network is vital to supporting growth in the region, and the latest Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan (WSIP) Report Card released today confirms progress is well underway and delivering benefits.

“The Narellan Road upgrade will provide additional capacity for the growing population of Western Sydney, improve traffic flow, and provide greater safety for motorists and residents,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Almost $20 million worth of contracts have been awarded to 65 Western Sydney suppliers and contractors since the announcement of the WSIP, which is translating into jobs for local residents.

“The $3.6 billion WSIP will create around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs over the next 10 years, and with more tenders to be announced in coming months including the Northern Road Stage 2 and Bringelly Road Stage 2, local businesses have a lot to look forward to.”

NSW Minister for Roads Duncan Gay said the multi-billion dollar Western Sydney transformation is the biggest roads construction boom in the history of the state.

“We’re making Western Sydney an even better place to live and do business,” Mr Gay said.

“Western Sydney is Australia’s third largest economy and following these major road upgrades we’re going to see even more companies investing in the area bringing more than 200,000 jobs with them.

“Narellan Road provides the link between the Hume Motorway and the Western Sydney Priority Growth Area around Badgery’s Creek Airport as well as direct access to the TAFE/Western Sydney University.

“Widening Narellan Road will cut congestion along this busy stretch and remove the notorious pinch point when accessing the Hume Motorway by extending the southbound entry ramp by 500 metres.”

Work on Stage Two is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2018.
