Vehicle Emissions Ministerial Forum Seeks Public Comment

The first meeting of the Turnbull Government’s Ministerial Forum on Vehicle Emissions, attended yesterday by Major Projects Minister Paul Fletcher, Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg and Environment Minister Greg Hunt, has agreed to hold a first public consultation meeting on 7 December and to issue a discussion paper seeking public feedback in 2016.

“The Ministerial Forum is examining what Government action is required to reduce harmful motor vehicle emissions on Australian roads and in our cities,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The Ministerial Forum brings together the infrastructure, energy and environment portfolios to examine current policy settings as well as a range of Commonwealth commitments including Australia’s 2030 target, National Clean Air Agreement, Direct Action Plan and National Energy Productivity Plan.

“The Turnbull Government seeks to harmonise our vehicle standards with international standards developed through the United Nations. We have recently adopted the United Nations based Euro 5 noxious emissions standards for light and heavy vehicles and are now considering the adoption of Euro 6. 

“We are also working with other countries to improve the vehicle testing arrangements for noxious emissions,” Mr Fletcher said.

Australia already has in place a mandatory consumer information programme that mandates fuel efficiency labelling on new cars, as well as the Government’s online Green Vehicle Guide that aims to assist consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.
