Upgrades to seven road Black Spots in Brisbane

Seven traffic Black Spots in Brisbane are slated for upgrade before the end of June on the back of $4.358 million in funding from the Turnbull Government.

Minister for Major Projects, Paul Fletcher said the upgrades are designed to prevent future accidents by installing or upgrading traffic signals, installing warning signage, removing hazards and road widening to improve safety for all road users.

“The Black Spot Programme is a key part of the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan which aims to reduce the number of people who die each year on our roads,” Mr Fletcher said at an onsite inspection at Blunder Road in Brisbane today.

“Blunder Road and Reedy Road is the first of the seven Black Spot projects in which works are due to begin mid-February, with the installation of new traffic lights and minor road works.”

The other six Black Spot projects are Sumners Road, Algester Road, Settlement Road, Bowhill Road, Sir Samuel Griffith Drive and Mt Nebo Road.

Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Council was tackling traffic congestion and delivering safer Brisbane streets.

“These upgrades will make our roads safer and prevent accidents, which reduces congestion and keeps our city moving,” Cr Quirk said.

“Over the past four years, we have delivered $2.16 billion of projects that are making our roads safer and tackling congestion.

“Already Team Quirk has delivered critical safety improvements to Jack Flynn Memorial Drive in Morningside and is now completing projects in Holland Park West and at Kangaroo Point.

“These seven projects include upgrades to traffic signals, upgrades to signage, removing road hazards and widening roads.”

Nationally the Australian Government has committed $500 million to the Black Spot Programme from 2014-15 to 2018-19, which includes an additional $200 million over two years from 2015-16 to improve road safety.
