Telegraph Road project moving ahead

Project works have been brought forward to progress the concept design of Stage 2 of the Telegraph Road corridor upgrade from Mustang Street, Bracken Ridge, to the Deagon Deviation.

Federal Major Projects Minister Paul Fletcher said Commonwealth funding was provided under the Black Spot Programme which aims to improve the safety of roads for motorists and local communities.

“This project continues the Turnbull Government’s commitment to deliver better roads and a stronger national transport network through infrastructure investment,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The Black Spot Programme is part of our commitment to reduce crashes on Australian roads.

“The Australian Government has committed $500 million to this programme out to 2018-19, which includes an additional $200 million over two years from 2015-16 to improve road safety across the nation.”

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the upgrade is being delivered in stages.

“Stage 1A was delivered in September 2014 and saw Telegraph Road widened to four lanes between the Telegraph Road Open Level Crossing project and Norris Road. A detailed design for Stage 1B from east of Norris Road to Mustang Street in Bracken Ridge is currently underway.

“This is essential road infrastructure designed to meet the needs of a vibrant and dynamic city,” Mr Howarth said.

 Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Council allocated $2.5 million in the 2015-16 Budget to advance the engineering design and complete preliminary investigations for Stage 2.

“Council has brought forward funding for this section of the Telegraph Road corridor upgrade, which aims to reduce congestion, improve safety and increase the capacity of this busy road to cater for current and future traffic demands,” Cr Quirk said.

“Once completed, the Telegraph Road corridor upgrade will support growth particularly in the northern suburbs, improving access to and from the city and helping to keep Brisbane moving.

“Detailed design work for Stage 1B is expected to be completed in early 2016 and provides for Telegraph Road to be widened from two to four lanes from Norris Road to east of Mustang Street with on-road bike lanes in both directions and a shared off-road pedestrian and cyclist footpath on the southern side.

“The upgrade will also deliver active travel infrastructure along the length of the Telegraph Road corridor, making walking and cycling safer and easier for residents.”

  The Telegraph Road Stage 1B is a jointly funded project with the Australian Government contributing $9.05 million and the Brisbane City Council $9.05 million.

Summary - Telegraph Road corridor upgrade

• Stage 1A: Delivered as part of the Telegraph Road Open Level Crossing Replacement Project and included widening Telegraph Road between the open level crossing project to the east of Norris Road. Completed September 2014
• Stage 1B: Detailed design expected to be completed in early 2016, with construction expected to commence in late 2016 and be completed in late 2017

• Stage 2: Funding for design work has been fast-tracked and is expected to be completed in late 2016.
