Paul Fletcher celebrates with successful recipients of Local Sporting Champions Grants

Successful recipients of Round 2 of the Local Sporting Champions Grant program in the federal electorate of Bradfield were today announced by the Federal Member, Mr Paul Fletcher.

There were six individual recipients:

-          Kaitlyn Pejkovic, Australian Age Swimming Championships

-          Jessica Meyer, NSW All Schools Softball Team

-          Lachlan Mackay, Australian Age National Swimming Championships

-          Callum Mackay, Australian Age National Swimming Championships

-          Charlotte Owens, State Gymnastics  Championships

-          Emma Long, Australian National Gymnastics Championships

The grants program, managed by the Australian Sports Commission, provides financial assistance to young athletes, coaches and officials to travel to participate in state or national sporting championships, or national school sport championships.

‘Opportunities for young people to participate in sport are critical in their development and also in sustaining and improving their performance. These grants help by reducing barriers to participation, such as distance and financial burden,’ said Mr Fletcher.

‘Grants of $500 per individual and $3000 per team are available to young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years inclusive and can contribute toward the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment for the nominated sporting championship.’

Applications for funding for events after July 1 are open until end of October 2011.  Applications must be submitted prior to the commencement of the championship. Information and application forms are available from the Australian Sports Commission, or http://www.ausport.gov.au/participating/schools_and_juniors/juniors/get_involved/local_sporting_champions.
