No guarantee that NBN won’t hang more overhead cables in Bradfield streets

Federal Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy has refused to guarantee that Bradfield will be spared the blight of new overhead telecommunications cables when the NBN is rolled out, Federal Member for Bradfield, Paul Fletcher MP, said today.

“I asked the Minister a question in Parliament on this issue – in the hope that he would rule out this threat and provide reassurance to the people of Bradfield,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Troublingly, he has conspicuously failed to provide such reassurance.

“This means that there is a real risk of more overhead cables being strung from pole to pole throughout the beautiful historic streets and the leafy treescape of Bradfield.

“What is more, documents issued by NBN Co indicate that there may be changes to the law to override the planning powers of local councils – allowing the NBN to string overhead cables regardless of local concerns.

“I will continue to monitor this issue carefully – and stand up against any attempt by the Gillard Labor Government to impose upon the people of Bradfield a rollout of overhead cables which does not have local support.”
