New Tasman/East Derwent Highway Ramps Now Open

Safety, access and overall transport efficiency on the eastern approaches to the Tasman Bridge have
been improved now that the Tasman / East Derwent Highway interchange improvements are
complete.

Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said the Turnbull Government fully funded the $15 million
project.
“A re-elected Turnbull Government can be relied on to deliver the infrastructure Tasmania needs,”
Mr Fletcher said.
“The new ramps connecting Tasman and East Derwent Highways have improved safety and
efficiency for motorists travelling through this very busy interchange.”
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding thanked motorists and residents in the local
area for their patience during works, which began in March 2015.
“The project has delivered greater connectivity between the suburbs along the East Derwent
Highway and areas including Rosny Hill Road, Rosny park, Mornington, Hobart Airport and
Cambridge Park.”
“The improved traffic flow for vehicles travelling over the Tasman Bridge also helps to reduce traffic
congestion at peak times of day, and to reduce travel times between these locations,” Mr Hidding
said.
“Works included the provision of a shared pedestrian and cycling path joining the Yolla Street
overpass to the Tasman Highway overpass, which will also help to connect those communities.”
Federal Liberal candidate for Franklin Amanda-Sue Markham said the Tasman Highway across the
Tasman Bridge was the most heavily trafficked road section in Tasmania, carrying in excess of 60,000
vehicles per day.
“It is a key link between central Hobart and major residential, commercial and industrial areas on
Hobart’s eastern shore,” Ms Markham said.
“The project involved upgrading the on and off ramps connecting the Tasman Highway to the
East Derwent Highway and Rosny Hill Road in Hobart, and has improved safety by removing the
need for the complex merging manoeuvres that were previously required, particularly for traffic
exiting East Derwent Highway.
“The ramps will provide a safer link to Hobart’s International Airport and reduce travel time to major
industrial and commercial precincts.”
