New lanes to open as key Adelaide intersection upgrade moves closer to completion

Traffic conditions at a popular Adelaide intersection will begin to improve from Wednesday with the opening of two newly constructed lanes.

The Main North Road and Nottage Terrace Intersection Upgrade at Medindie, which is supporting 15 full-time-equivalent jobs, is now more than halfway complete with motorists beginning to see the benefits.

The opening of the two new lanes for northbound traffic, as well as an extension of the left-turn lane and priority bus lane for southbound traffic, marks a major milestone for the project.

Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the $19 million project is being delivered under the Morrison Government’s Urban Congestion Fund and will help ensure commuters get home sooner and safer.

“The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely,” Minister Fletcher said.

“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 177 individual packages of works nationwide. The total number of Urban Congestion Fund projects around Australia that are completed or underway is 71, with a further 43 expected to start construction this year.

“This is just the latest example of us delivering on our commitment to progress critical infrastructure projects across the country under our record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia's world-leading economic recovery.”

South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon Corey Wingard MP, said the opening of the new lanes was another step towards works on the upgrade moving into the home stretch.

“The Marshall Government building what matters to South Australians as we continue to make our road network better, more efficient and safer for everyone,” Minister Wingard said.

“There will still be speed restrictions and some lane closures as work continues on the project but this is an exciting development.

“Reducing congestion at key intersections like this one is a priority of the Marshall Government. This intersection forms part of the outer ring route, which is a key road corridor for vehicles travelling from the south and the CBD to the north-eastern suburbs.

“When complete, the upgrade will also deliver dual right-turn lanes onto Nottage Terrace, reducing lengthy delays during peak times and ensuring a shorter commute for the approximately 66,750 motorists who travel through this intersection every day.

“The old intersection was unsafe, with 31 crashes reported in the past five years and approximately 65 per cent of those being rear end crashes.”

The current southbound and eastbound traffic configuration will be maintained, as will right turns into Nottage Terrace, as work continues.

The intersection upgrade project will also include widening sections of Main North Road and Nottage Terrace, a new northbound priority bus lane, upgraded pedestrian crossings, and an extension of the existing northbound bicycle lane.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2021, weather permitting.

Motorists are urged to take care, observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controls when travelling through the area.

The project is jointly funded (50:50) by the Australian and South Australian governments.
