New Classification for Computer Games Highlights Online Safety Challenge for Kids and Parents
Today’s introduction of legislation introducing a R18+ classification for computer games highlights the online safety challenges for kids and parents, said Paul Fletcher, Member for Bradfield and Chair of the Coalition’s Online Safety Working Group.
The explosion of online gaming, and the convergence of devices – with the Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox amongst others acting as both a games console and an internet access device – has created yet another area where parents need to understand the risks their children are exposed to, and what steps they can take to manage those risks.
It is extraordinary that until now electronic games – which often contain extremely rich graphical content – have not been aligned with the classification system which applies to movies.
The Coalition has established the Online Safety Working Group to consult with children, parents and other stakeholders about what children are doing online, the risks they face as a result, and measures to help ensure that children are protected against those risks.
‘As we move around the country holding forums on these issues, I am sure we will here from parents and children about online gaming – and whether children are being exposed to unsuitable material as a result,’ said Mr Fletcher.
‘I encourage parents, children and others with concerns about this issue to make a submission to the OSWG or arrange to attend one of our forums’.
The first forum will be held in Launceston and Hobart on Friday 24 February.
