NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK COMING TO BRADFIELD

Superfast broadband is coming to over 50,000 homes and businesses in the electorate of Bradfield under an accelerated three-year rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN), Federal Member for Bradfield Paul Fletcher MP announced today.

“Today’s announcement is a very important milestone for Bradfield residents, who can now see when the NBN rollout will reach their home or business,” said Mr Fletcher. “By September 2018 over 50,000 premises across Bradfield will be able to connect to the NBN or will be under construction, from Chatswood and Roseville in the south to Asquith and Mount Colah in the north.”

Across Australia the NBN is powering ahead with the release today of a comprehensive construction plan to network 9.5 million premises nationwide. NBN has released its full construction schedule, providing Australians with details of the areas where the network will be rolled out over the next three years.

The new rollout plan, which extends out to September 2018, provides a breakdown of when the network will be starting in specific locations and the type of technology that will be used.

Construction will commence in Bradfield in the first half of 2017 and over 50,000 premises across Bradfield will be under construction or able to connect to the NBN by mid-2018, with the rollout planned to come to Bradfield locations in line with the following schedule:

Mr Fletcher, a former Optus executive, was until recently Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, working on NBN issues before his recent promotion to the frontbench as Minister for Territories, Local Government and Major Projects.

“I am a strong believer in the benefits that broadband will bring to Australia – and delighted to be able to announce a clear and detailed plan for the NBN rollout in Bradfield,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Because our area has extensive cable, or HFC, networks, rolled out by Telstra and Optus in the 1990s to deliver pay TV, we have a head start when it comes to the NBN rollout.”

“Under the Coalition’s Multi-Technology Mix (MTM) approach to the NBN, the HFC networks will be upgraded to deliver 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) speeds – with an upgrade path to even faster speeds in the future,” he said.

Nationwide, more than 1.3 million homes and businesses are now able to connect to the NBN and there are almost 700,000 premises under construction. The rollout across Australia is due to be completed by 2020.
