Mulgoa Road corridor upgrade to slash travel times between Penrith and M4 Motorway

Motorists travelling on one of Sydney’s most notoriously congested corridors are in for relief with the preferred design for the Mulgoa and Castlereagh Roads upgrade released today.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the Australian and NSW Governments are working together to progress the widening of the vital 6.5-kilometre corridor between the city of Penrith and the M4 Western Motorway to cut journey times and reduce congestion.

“The Mulgoa Road corridor upgrade is a vital piece of infrastructure we’re determined to fast track with $100 million allocated to progress Stage 1, between Jeanette Street at Regentville and Blaikie Road at Jamisontown, and designs complete for the next stages,” Minister Fletcher said.

“The full upgrade will provide three lanes in each direction along the full 6.5-kilometre route along with upgraded intersections, including traffic-light intersections at Andrews Road, Coreen Avenue and Glenmore Parkway with the community now invited to view the latest plans.”

Minister for Western Sydney and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the progressive upgrade of the full 6.5-kilometre corridor will bring huge relief to road users and offer faster travel to an improved motorway network.

The Penrith community has been crying out for this upgrade and now this Government is getting on with the job of delivering it

“The Penrith community has been crying out for this upgrade and now this Government is getting on with the job of delivering it,” Mr Ayres said.

“Already carrying almost 4,000 cars per hour in the morning and afternoon peak, we need to boost capacity now and upgrade intersections to improve travel across Penrith.

“Through a staged delivery to widen the entire 6.5 kilometre corridor, we’ll minimise disruption and ensure we tackle the priority areas first, making Penrith an even better place to live and work.”

New South Wales Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, welcomed the $100 million funding boost for the first stage of the project which comes in addition to the $70 million allocated to progress work for the Jane Street upgrade project.

“This upgrade will do more for the community than just congestion busting; it will increase bus travel times with priority at intersections, improved pedestrian paths and cycling connections on the eastern side and a footpath on the western side.”

“We’ve worked hard to get this preferred design in order and I encourage community members to ensure they view the animation and images, get along to a community information session and have their say on this hugely transformative project.”
