Media Release: Support for 2019 National Indigenous Art Fair

The Morrison Government is providing almost $40,000 to support this year’s upcoming National Indigenous Art Fair in Sydney on 29-30 June.

The two day Art Fair, now in its second year, follows the success of the 2018 event which attracted 15,000 visitors from across Australia.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the Australian Government is committed to investing in the Indigenous visual arts industry.

“We are proud to support a national Indigenous art fair of this calibre,” Minister Fletcher said.

“This year’s event features the works of some 30 remote Indigenous-owned art centres from the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

“There is an impressive line-up of activities including live music, Aboriginal dance and weaving and a diverse range of paintings, textiles and sculptures.

The majority of the 30 art centres that will feature at this year’s Art Fair also receive funding through the Government’s Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) Program.

“This extra funding will help these arts centres showcase their work to new audiences, who in turn have the opportunity to purchase directly from the artist,” Minister Fletcher said.

The Art Fair is run by the First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation and will be held at Sydney’s Circular Quay on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June, ahead of NAIDOC Week.
