Media Release: Six million NBN activations and counting

More than six million homes and businesses across Australia now have an active National Broadband Network (NBN) connection and are enjoying the benefits of fast and affordable high-speed broadband.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher, said the nation’s largest infrastructure project is speeding towards completion with almost 40,000 premises being activated each week.

“Six years ago the Liberal National Government inherited an NBN project in disarray. Labor had spent $6 billion over six years and barely 50,000 premises were connected to the fixed line network,” Minister Fletcher said.

“To reach six million premises this week shows how we have turned this project around.

“The NBN is on track to be completed next year, and is already delivering faster, more reliable, and more affordable broadband services to the majority of Australians.”

More than 65 per cent of new activations are on plans delivering speeds of 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) or higher.

Our focus is on completing the rollout and on maximising the economic and social benefits of the NBN,” Minister Fletcher said.

Once the NBN is complete, all Australian households will have access to broadband speeds of 25 Mbps and 90 per cent of fixed line households will be able to receive 50 Mbps services.
