Media Release: Have your say on new M5 Belmore Road Ramps at Riverwood

Motorists and residents are invited to have their say on a congestion-busting upgrade of the M5 South West Motorway at Riverwood, with public feedback invited on the project design and Review of Environmental Factors.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the upgrade would better link some of Sydney’s fastest-growing suburbs to the city centre, saving motorists more than two kilometres travel each way when travelling to the CBD from suburbs such as Hurstville.

“Community feedback will help improve the design of new ramps at Belmore Road, which will allow faster and smoother access to the M5, reducing congestion and travel times for motorists and helping tackle the congestion that costs the Sydney economy in time delays and lost productivity,” Mr Fletcher said.

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the $31.6 million project would make life easier for the 125,000 or so people that use the M5 South West Motorway each and every day, while reducing the numbers of trucks travelling on local roads.

“Key features of the proposal include a new entry ramp for direct access to the M5 South West Motorway to travel east from Belmore Road towards Sydney Airport and the city and a new exit ramp for motorists travelling west on the M5 South West Motorway to access Belmore Road,” Mrs Pavey said.

Federal Member for Banks David Coleman said the existing eastbound exit road ramp would also be widened to allow an additional right turn lane onto Belmore Road and the shared pathway network will be extended through Rotary Park, adjacent to the M5 South West Motorway.

“This project will resolve the issue of motorists being unable to access the M5 at Riverwood from an easterly direction,” Mr Coleman said.

New South Wales Member for Oatley Mark Coure said the project would improve connections to surrounding arterial roads for local communities.

“People have to drive through the streets of Narwee, Riverwood and Beverly Hills to get onto the M5 South West Motorway at Beverly Hills which is not ideal and contributes to congestion on local streets,” Mr Coure said.

There will be opportunity for the community to come and talk to the project team at two drop-in sessions during the exhibition. The information sessions will be held at the Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre, 150 Belmore Road North, Riverwood, on Tuesday 28 November and Tuesday 5 December 2017 from 4pm to 7pm.

Feedback will be considered and a submissions report published. Roads and Maritime will finalise the Review of Environmental Factors and prepare for construction in the first quarter of 2018, subject to project approval.
