Media Release: Construction starts on NorthLink WA Northern Section

Construction on the third and final section of NorthLink WA between Ellenbrook and Muchea is underway, bringing the $1.02 billion project another step closer to reality.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the project would support more than 7,000 direct and indirect jobs and was part of the Turnbull Government’s record $75 billion infrastructure package.

“NorthLink WA Northern Section is the final piece in this vital $1 billion project to improve safety and ease congestion on local roads, while shifting 80 per cent of heavy vehicles from Great Northern Highway onto the new route,” Mr Fletcher said.

“This is an example of how the Turnbull Government’s delivery of almost $7 billion worth of infrastructure projects in Western Australia is boosting the economy and creating jobs.”

Western Australian Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti said the project would contribute to the region’s economy by delivering stronger, more efficient road connections between industrial areas.

“NorthLink WA will contribute to potential future employment opportunities by connecting to current and future industrial areas. Importantly, the new road will take heavy traffic away from roads in the Swan Valley, which will boost safety and potential as a tourist destination,” Ms Saffioti said.

Federal Member for Pearce Christian Porter said together with the Southern and Central sections, NorthLink WA Northern Section delivers a four-six lane national highway that will support both current and predicted traffic.

“Travelling from Kewdale to Muchea, NorthLink WA will potentially avoid up to 16 sets of traffic lights, two railway crossings, and 21 speed limit changes, while separate cycling and pedestrian paths will provide safer and better connections between local communities,” Mr Porter said.

Western Australian Member for Swan Hills Jessica Shaw said the project would be a vital part of Perth’s freight network and provide a new transport link from Perth Airport to Muchea.

“NorthLink is going to deliver huge benefits for the Ellenbrook and Bullsbrook communities. This project is going to ease local congestion, make it easier for my constituents to access jobs, as well as paving the way for the North Ellenbrook Industrial Area,” Ms Shaw said.

Road safety will also be improved by using a combination of median strips, and around 150 kilometres of road safety barriers to separate vehicles from oncoming traffic, as well as eliminating four of the state’s most dangerous intersections.

The Northern Section of NorthLink WA getting underway today will be delivered by CPB Contractors Pty Ltd and is due for completion by mid-2019.

The Turnbull Government has committed $821 million and Western Australian Government has committed $204 million toward NorthLink WA.
