Media release: $20 million upgrade to Canterbury Road

A re-elected Turnbull Government will reduce congestion and improve road capacity by investing $20 million in the upgrade of Canterbury Road between Dorset Road and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

The upgrade will see the existing roundabout in the Montrose township at the intersection of Canterbury Road, Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Montrose Road and Swansea Road removed and replaced with traffic lights.

In addition, a third lane will be added to Canterbury Road for traffic heading from Dorset Road in Bayswater North through to Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Montrose, which will include upgrading of bus stops and pedestrian connections to bus stops.

These works are designed to relieve the nightly traffic congestion experienced by evening commuters heading home to the Dandenongs and Yarra Valley.

It will also significantly improve safety in Montrose township by replacing the roundabout with traffic lights. This will reduce risks for pedestrians crossing Canterbury Road to access bus stops and ensure safety for school children accessing the nearby Montrose Primary School.

Upgrading Canterbury Road has been a priority for Tony Smith, Federal Member for Casey. It is also a priority project for Yarra Ranges Council.

Canterbury Road is a key road for the communities of the Dandenongs and the Yarra Valley.

These works will ensure locals, businesses and tourists will spend less travel time stuck on the roads and more time with their families.

The Turnbull Government is investing a total of $7.6 billion in Victorian infrastructure. In addition, the Turnbull Government remains committed to the East West Link and will provide $3 billion to the first Victorian Government willing to build this vital project.
