Media Release: $1 million to support touring exhibitions to regional Australia

The Australian Government has today announced $1 million to tour 16 exhibitions across Australia through the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach (NCITO) program.

The program provides funding for the national institutions to bring more Australian and overseas cultural material to all Australians through national tours, and increases international exposure of Australian artists.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the program allows all Australians to experience the best of our national cultural collections.

“This funding will enable 16 exhibitions drawn from 7 of our national collecting institutions to tour across Australia in 2019-20, including to regional and remote areas,” said Minister Fletcher.

Successful projects include:

  • The National Portrait Gallery of Australia’s National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition, which features the best in contemporary photographic portraiture, touring to 6 venues in New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
  • The National Museum of Australia’s Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years! exhibition touring to 3 venues across South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
  • The National Film and Sound Archive’s interactive exhibition Mastering the Archive touring to 22 aged care facilities in New South Wales, and Starstruck: Australian Movie Portraits the Archive’s highly successful collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, which will tour to New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

Of the exhibitions, 11 will travel to 17 regional and remote venues across 5 states and the Northern Territory in 2019-20.

Over the last 10 years, the program has supported more than 300 exhibitions touring to more than 150 locations across the country and 3 international tours.
