Lights to shine at National Gallery

The National Gallery of Australia will receive a $20 million upgrade to its lighting system as part of the Morrison Government’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the funding will be used to replace the Gallery’s ageing halogen lighting with modern LED technology.

“The new LED lighting will enable a longer operating life and significantly lower operating costs, as well as emitting minimal amounts of UV light, avoiding colour degradation damage to valuable artworks,” Minister Fletcher said.

“This additional Government funding demonstrates our commitment to our national collecting institutions and our support for showcasing visual arts.”

The replacement of lighting is a major undertaking and is expected to take up to two years to complete. The Gallery will deliver these works with minimal disruption to visitors.
