Joint Release with Peter Hendy MP: Fletcher and Hendy visit Wolumla NBN satellite ground station

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Peter Hendy MP, will today welcome Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP to the Bega Valley to visit the Wolumla NBN satellite ground station.

The Wolumla satellite ground station is one of ten critical pieces of infrastructure built in remote and regional Australia for the Long Term Satellite Service.

“The Wolumla satellite ground station is an important step towards completing the satellite service and bringing fast broadband to regional and remote communities,” Dr Hendy said.

“This impressive facility is a critical part of bringing fast broadband to remote communities.”

“This is in addition to fixed wireless construction which has already begun to connect residents in outlying areas near Bega to the NBN.”

“Labor had six years in office and delivered nothing for Bega. They promised the world to residents in my electorate, but their handling of the NBN was a slow motion train wreck,” Dr Hendy said.

The Government’s changes to the NBN rollout will save $32 billion, will see upgrades delivered four years sooner than under Labor and avoid Internet retail bills increasing by up to $43 a month.

“We are working systematically to stabilise and speed up the NBN rollout,” Mr Fletcher said. “When we came into Government around 344,000 premises could be served by the NBN; a little over a year later that figure has roughly doubled to 748,000; so while there is plenty more to do we are showing significant progress.”
