Joint Media Statement: Work starting on third northbound lane as part of M1 upgrades

The M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade between Tuggerah and Doyalson is charging ahead, with work to start on Tuesday January 30 on construction of a third northbound lane of the motorway.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said more than 70,000 motorists who use this section of motorway each day would benefit from improved traffic flow and road safety once the project was completed.

“The project is one of three M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrades worth $391.6 million, jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments to provide a better and more reliable M1,” Mr Fletcher said.

“We are rebuilding a nine-kilometre section of the motorway between Wyong River and the Doyalson interchange to improve the road surface, as well as providing safety and capacity improvements to key motorway interchanges at Warnervale and Doyalson.”

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said work was progressing well on the 12-kilometre upgrade, which involved widening the motorway to provide three lanes in each direction between Wyong Road at Tuggerah and Doyalson Link Road.

“The upgrades will benefit all motorists by increasing traffic capacity along the motorway which means less congestion and better travel times for motorists, improved road safety and a smoother road surface,” Mrs Pavey said.

“Work involves separating the two existing northbound lanes for 800 metres from around two kilometres north of the Tuggerah interchange to just after the Alison Road overpass. The full Tuggerah to Doyalson upgrade is expected to be completed in 2020, weather permitting.”

During the work, no changes will be made to the southbound travel lanes and the speed limit will remain at 80km/h for the safety of workers and all road users. These arrangements are expected to be in place from Monday January 29 until Wednesday March 28, weather permitting.
