Joint Media Release: Design and build phase begins for Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive Interchange

A congestion-busting project in Perth’s northern corridor has reached an important milestone with proposals called from industry to design and build the $50 million Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive Interchange.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the project would involve building a grade-separated interchange, with Joondalup Drive passing over Wanneroo Road with two lanes in each direction.

“The project will future-proof the area’s road network for the traffic growth expected due to residential and industrial development in Perth’s northern suburbs,” Mr Fletcher said.

“This project is expected to support 280 jobs and is yet another example of how the Turnbull Government’s $6.8 billion investment in infrastructure across Western Australia is creating jobs and boosting economic growth.”

Western Australian Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti said BMD Constructions Pty Ltd, CPB Contractors Pty Ltd, Cut and Fill Pty Ltd and Georgiou Pty Ltd had been invited to submit a proposal to design and build the project following a six-week expression of interest period.

“Reducing congestion in Perth’s northern suburbs is a key objective of the $2.3 billion road and rail infrastructure package, jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments,” Ms Saffioti said.

“This project builds upon the successful opening of the Mitchell Freeway extension between Burns Beach Road and Hester Avenue in August 2017.”

Federal Member for Pearce Christian Porter said the project will complement other significant upgrades in the area to reduce travel times on Wanneroo Road – currently used as an alternate route to Mitchell Freeway, and Joondalup Drive.

“The Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive Interchange is one of three major upgrades in Perth's northern corridor over coming years, along with widening of Wanneroo Road between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive, and an upgrade of the Wanneroo Road and Ocean Reef Road Interchange,” Mr Porter said.

“Upon completion, these complementary projects will remove bottlenecks from Wanneroo Road, leading to safer and more efficient journeys around our suburbs.”

The Turnbull Government has committed $40 million to fund the $50 million project, with Western Australia committing the remaining $10 million. A contract award is anticipated in May 2018 with construction beginning mid-2018.
