Election on Yom Kippur creates difficulties for Bradfield's Jewish Community

‘The decision by the Labor Prime Minister to hold the next election on Yom Kippur - the holiest and most solemn day in the Jewish calendar - creates significant difficulties for Australians of Jewish faith as they seek to exercise their right to vote’, Member for Bradfield Paul Fletcher said today.

‘In my view it is regrettable that the Prime Minister did not take account of this issue as she settled on September 14 as the date for the election.

‘As Jewish constituents have explained to me, Yom Kippur is observed by more members of the Jewish community than any other day in the Jewish religious calendar.

‘With Bradfield having the second largest Jewish community of any federal electorate in NSW, this issue will have quite an impact in our area.

‘Members of the Jewish Community will need to make arrangements to pre-poll or lodge a postal vote.

‘If any Member of Bradfield’s Jewish community needs assistance in how to pre-poll or how to register for a postal vote, they can contact my office on (02) 94653950 or email me at [email protected] and I will be pleased to assist’, Mr Fletcher concluded.
