Construction starts on new River Torrens pedestrian bridge

Construction has begun on a new $2 million pedestrian and cycling bridge across the River Torrens in West Hindmarsh.

 Federal Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said the bridge was part of the $896 million Torrens Road to River Torrens Project, which is supporting about 480 jobs a year during construction.

“This bridge will deliver important pedestrian and cycling links across the River Torrens, which will provide access and improve safety,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The community will benefit from better connections between the River Torrens Linear Park and the Outer Harbor Greenway, and that will help to encourage activities such as walking and cycling.”

South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the bridge would be built by South Australian company SMB Civil.

“This project will help meet the State’s strategic objective of creating a more vibrant Adelaide, focusing on cycling and walking,” Mr Mullighan said.

“This is an example of how a major roads project primarily focused at freight and commuter traffic can successfully integrate other transport options.

“Better access to community facilities such as the Thebarton Senior College, Thebarton Community Centre, St Joseph’s school and local shopping precincts should encourage more people to leave the car at home.

“Lighting will be installed on the bridge and along the existing paths improving safety and security at night.”

The bridge at McDonnell Avenue will span 30 metres and will be three metres wide. Construction commenced recently and will be completed in early 2016, weather permitting.

The Australian Government has committed $1.7 billion and the South Australian Government $769 million to deliver the Torrens to Torrens, Darlington and Northern Connector projects.
