Construction kicks off on $17 million Coomera Station park 'n' ride upgrade

Work has started on 500 new spaces at Coomera Station park 'n' ride, which will double the carparks capacity.

The $17 million expansion is funded on a 50:50 basis by the Australian and Queensland governments.

Federal Minister for Communication, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the project would help provide relief to local commuters and cater for regional population growth.

“The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely,” Minister Fletcher said.

“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 185 packages of work nationwide. The total number of projects that are now completed or underway nationwide is 81.

“This is just the latest example of us delivering on our commitment to progress critical infrastructure projects across the country under our record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia’s economic recovery.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister said the upgrade bolstered the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to improve access to public transport.

“Over the next four years we’ll be adding more than 3200 new parking spaces, through our record $27.5 billion roads and transport plan,” Mr Bailey said.

“Work kicks off today on 500 new spaces at Coomera station, which will make public transport easier to access and help to reduce congestion on our roads.

“The project will also support active transport connections, with a new bike shelter included as part of the project - expanding secure storage capacity and relocating existing bike lockers closer to the station.

“Not only will this create better connections to high-frequency rail and bus services, but we’ll also be creating about 45 local jobs at a time when it is needed most.

“We are proud to be prioritising investments to where they are most needed and have a positive impact on our communities”

Federal Member for Fadden, the Hon Stuart Robert MP, said a new commuter shelter would also be added to the existing kiss ‘n’ ride for quick drop-offs and pick-ups.

“New spaces will be built on vacant land east of Coomera station, which will minimise customer impact during construction,” Minister Robert said.

“Projects like the park ‘n’ ride upgrade are helping to connect communities, while creating jobs and supporting Australia’s economic recovery.”

Gold Coast based Palaszczuk Government Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the parks would add to the 1250 new spaces built across the South East to the benefit of local public transport users.

"The $160 million park ‘n’ ride upgrade program will make it easier than ever for people to access rail and bus services – demonstrating our commitment to an integrated, safe, efficient, reliable public transport system for Queensland,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Located near schools, shopping centres and the Dreamworld theme park, the capacity upgrade at Coomera station will benefit those far and wide.

“Construction will be undertaken in a staged approach to ensure customers can continue to use the existing park ‘n’ ride during construction.

“As each section is completed and opened the contractor will seamlessly move on to the next, with all spaces expected to be complete by the end of the year (2022).”

As part of the project, the bus interchange will be upgraded to include new driver facilities to enhance operational efficiencies and allow for future growth in customer demand.

Upgraded lighting and CCTV cameras will bolster security and more accessible spaces will be added, bringing the total to more than 20.
