Coalition planning ahead for roads in Queanbeyan and Canberra

A re-elected Turnbull Government will make fixing roads in Eden-Monaro and the ACT a key priority with $9 million committed today.

$6 million will be provided by a re-elected Turnbull Government for the intersection upgrade of Lanyon Drive and Tompsitt Drive, upgrading the existing roundabout to a signalled intersection.

Last year the New South Wales Government announced a $5 million commitment towards this critical project and will now provide an additional $1 million, matching the Turnbull Government’s commitment. This will ensure this important $12 million intersection upgrade can be completed.

This upgrade will provide safer and improved access for road users to Jerrabomberra, Googong, and the new development of South Jerrabomberra.

Planning for this project is already underway with major work expected to start mid next year.

A further $1 million will be provided for design works for widening the Monaro Highway, connecting Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong to Civic, Gungahlin and Canberra Airport.

Widening the Monaro Highway from Hume to Canberra Avenue would facilitate the growth of Tuggeranong and Hume in the ACT, working to prevent a major road in the Canberra region from increasing congestion.

It would also benefit residents in Jerrabomberra, Googong and new development at South Jerrabomberra, connecting the growth regions of Queanbeyan with employment areas in the ACT. 

An additional $2 million will be committed for design works for the duplication of Pialligo Avenue. This project would better connect residents in Queanbeyan and the Palerang region with the ACT and Canberra Airport. It would also cater for future traffic from the new Ellerton Drive Extension.

Works would also include planning for a potential link from Pialligo Avenue to the Kings Highway, providing a northern bypass for Queanbeyan.

This $9 million package would help to unlock future housing supply by providing better access to homes and jobs, benefiting housing affordability in Queanbeyan and Canberra.

Today’s announcement builds on the existing $50 million Barton Highway duplication package and $25 million for the construction of the Ellerton Drive Extension in Queanbeyan.
