Call for tenders Kempton to Melton Mowbray Stage Two

TENDERS are being called for Stage Two of the Kempton to Melton Mowbray section of the Midland Highway upgrade.

Minister for Major Projects, Territories and Local Government Paul Fletcher said the project is part of the Midland Highway 10 Year Action Plan to improve safety and provide benefit to all road users on the Midland Highway.

“The Australian Government is investing $400 million and the Tasmanian Government $100 million over 10 years to improve safety and lives on the Midland Highway, Tasmania’s key north-south freight route,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The overall objective of the 10 year investment in the Midland Highway is to raise the safety standard of the highway to a minimum 3 star AusRAP rating over the highway’s entire length.

“The Kempton to Melton Mowbray Stage Two project will improve the safety of approximately six kilometres of highway that runs past Kempton.”

Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said the call for tenders for Stage Two coincides with the start of works for Kempton to Melton Mowbray Stage One, which will provide improvements to the highway north of Kempton.

“Works will include road widening, extended sealed shoulders, additional overtaking lanes, upgrading junctions and installing flexible safety barriers to separate opposing traffic,” Mr Hidding said.

“Kempton to Melton Mowbray Stage Two is the seventh project that will be underway on the Midland Highway this construction season.

“We recognise there will be some disruption and delays for motorists travelling along the highway as the safety improvements are progressively rolled out.

“With several projects underway on the Midland Highway it is important that motorists plan their journey to allow some extra time, particularly those travelling the full length of the Highway.”
