Big plans on the road to Batemans Bay

Batemans Bay’s roads network is in for a major upgrade with millions of dollars pledged by a re-elected Turnbull Government.

Minister for Major Projects, Territories, and Local Government, Paul Fletcher, has joined with Federal Member for Gilmore, Ann Sudmalis, to pledge $9 million for vital roads projects.

The election funding promise includes $2.5 million for a roundabout and pavement works on Beach Road to create easier and safer access to the Hanging Rock sporting, recreational and cultural complex.

“This intersection roundabout is designed to service the high traffic loads using the intersection and improve pedestrian safety to this regional precinct,” Mr Fletcher said.

A further $3.5 million has been pledged to upgrade Beach Road between Perry Street and Vesper Street, including installing traffic lights at the Perry Street intersection.

“The Coalition Government has a real commitment to Batemans Bay, and this investment is all about providing the best setting in which local businesses can grow, prosper and employ more people,” Mrs Sudmalis said.

Mr Fletcher agreed the plans would provide a major boost to a key area of Batemans Bay.

“This project offers significant support to the business and residential community within the Batemans Bay regional town centre and beyond,” he said.

“Beach Road is the major regional road servicing Batemans Bay and environs. The section of Beach Road from Perry Street to Vesper Street also directly fronts and services Batemans Bay CBD.

“The proposed road upgrade would include increasing Beach Road to six traffic lanes, inclusive of dedicated left and right turn lanes at Perry Street intersection.

“The proposal also includes provision of traffic lights at Beach Road/Perry Street intersection, including pedestrian activated crossings to significantly improve access within the CBD and pedestrian safety.”

The final project is a $3 million upgrade to the entrance to the Tomakin village at the intersection of George Bass Drive and Tomakin Road.

Mrs Sudmalis said the upgrade was a response to the community raising continued concerns about safety on the busy George Bass Drive.

“This intersection would be upgraded and include a new road access link to the Tomakin township via Sunpatch Parade to provide safer access via a new four way roundabout,” Mrs Sudmalis said.

“The plan includes pedestrian refuges to enhance safety for those accessing the shared pathway to the nearby shopping precincts at the Moorings, near the Tomaga River.”

Mr Fletcher praised Mrs Sudmalis’ advocacy in fighting to support the community and ensure funding was provided for the upgrades.

“Ann is a real champion for her area, and her determination is why she has been so successful in obtaining so much in federal roads funds since she was elected in 2013,” Mr Fletcher said.

He said funding for all three projects would be delivered if the Turnbull Government was reelected on July 2.
