An iconic new CBD entrance for the capital of the North

Detailed community consultation commences this week for Darwin's new CBD entrance via Barneson Boulevard and the continued duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive.

A workshop this Saturday will seek feedback on a concept design to create the iconic new entry into the Darwin City Centre, with more information sessions being held in January and February 2017.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the $39.53 million project is being delivered in partnership with the City of Darwin and the Northern Territory and Australian governments.

“The Australian Government is providing up to $29.53 million for this project and both the Northern Territory Government and the City of Darwin Council are each providing $5 million,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Providing a new link from Tiger Brennan Drive to Cavenagh Street (via Barneson Boulevard) and completing the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive from Dinah Beach Road to McMinn Street delivers a better outcome for commuters into the CBD and will improve traffic flow into and out of the Darwin CBD.”

Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Nicole Manison said this important construction project will support jobs and economic growth in the CBD.

“The construction of the Barneson Boulevard entry and completion of the final stage of the Tiger Brennan Drive duplication to create a new inner city transport corridor will have flow on benefits for economic development in the city centre,” Ms Manison said

Darwin Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim says the concept was a key platform for the Darwin City Centre Master Plan.

“Barneson Boulevard will provide stimulus to our local economy, whilst delivering a much needed connector to our city centre,” said Lord Mayor Katina Fong Lim.

Key points of the design will include :

  • creation of sense of place and arrival into the CBD
  • wide footpaths and segregated cycle ways
  • tree planting and landscaping to create shade and visual character
  • a four-lane link for vehicles to Tiger Brennan Drive

City centre stakeholders can discuss concept designs with transport infrastructure specialists at the community workshop on Saturday 10 December from 10am to Midday at Travelodge Mirambeena Resort.

Following thorough community consultation, construction of the Barneson Boulevard project and further duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive will commence in mid-2017.
