$3 Billion NorthConnex Opens

NorthConnex will open to motorists this weekend, with the final safety checks being completed on the $3 billion mega-project, that will change the way drivers travel across Sydney.

Motorists will be able to by-pass 21 sets of traffic lights between the M1 and M2 motorways, completing the long-awaited ‘missing link’ in the National Highway network.

The tunnel will save drivers up to 15 minutes in their morning and evening commutes, easing congestion and boosting productivity.

Air quality and road safety will also be improved, with NorthConnex seeing the removal of up to 5,000 trucks per day moved off Pennant Hills Road, one of New South Wales’ most congested roads.

“Australian-first, innovative lighting displays will help keep drivers alert, with stunning starscapes, trees and native birds highlighting the transition from the rural environment in the north to the urban environment of the city” said Member for Bradfield, Paul Fletcher.

The Australian and NSW Government’s have thanked more than 20,000 residents living along the corridor for their cooperation and patience throughout the project – which saw the creation of 8,700 jobs for NSW over the length of the tunnel’s construction.

NorthConnex is a $3 billion project, which includes $577.3 million from the NSW Government, $412.3 million from the Australian Government and $2 billion from Transurban and its private sector partners.
