Tuesday 20 October 2026, Future Media Series, Paris
In Paris this week for the Future Media conference, ‘From Regulation to Revenue to Renaissance’, I joined a panel discussion about Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code with conference organiser Ricky Sutton.
Legislated in 2021 when I was Communications Minister, the Code is estimated to have delivered over $200 m in payments from Google & Facebook to Australian news media businesses.
We were joined by Stephen Jones, now Australia’s Ambassador to the OECD, who while a Minister crafted Labor’s successor, the News Media Bargaining Incentive. It was a good discussion of the Australian approach to regulating big tech & points where Liberal & Labor agree & where we differ.
It was great to speak with media sector executives from many countries including the CEO of Agence France-Presse, Fabrice Fries, who hosted the conference at AFP’s impressive Paris headquarters building.
