Indigenous Rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas
Indigenous Rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas programs help ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people maintain their distinctive cultural, spiritual, physical and economic relationship with their land and waters, to the benefit of all Australians.
The Government has committed over $746 million to extend the Indigenous Rangers Program from 2021 to 2028. This significant investment provides long-term economic and job security for more than 1,900 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed under the Indigenous Ranger Program. Acknowledging the importance of employment opportunities for women, the Indigenous Ranger workforce consists of up to 30 per cent females and continues to grow; empowering them to care for Country and become role models for younger generations.
